Fun Skirt Outfit Ideas for Spring/Summer

What’s up ladies?! I don’t know about you, but I have been having a serious case of winter blues. :P Thankfully the snow filled season of bulky layers and constant bundling is almost over! (In case you haven't noticed, I hate the cold. :P) One thing that I am really loving this year are maxi skirts. Well, not just maxi skirts but skirts in general. Now I’ve never been a huge fan of skirts because I could never find one that I absolutely loved and that was comfortable. Another problem that I struggled with was figuring out how to actually make outfits with them that seemed to fit in to what the world around me defined as “cool”. I mean I wanted to look like the recent fashion trends, but I also wanted to be modest at the same time. Now that I’m older and I've developed my own style more, I now have a better idea of how to wear skirts that are comfortable, stylish and all around fun! :) Here are a few ideas of different ways to dress up/down and make fabulous outfits with a skirt for spring! :)

1. Mixing Patterns
Mixing patterns is one of the best ways to experiment with your wardrobe, let alone a great way to have fun with skirts. Through changing up your usual look by mixing patterns you create new outfits you would have never thought of using before. The easiest way to get a hang of how to mix patterns is starting off simple by using polka dots and strips. Then when you get more adventurous you can experiment by throwing in different floral prints and so on. Sometimes it's easy to be get caught up with the idea that everything has to be ultra “matchy- matchy” in a way.  By mixing a regular polka dotted T-shirt and a nice stripped skirt you have created a much more vibrant look. ;)

2. Pleated Skirts
Pleated skirts are an awesome option. These skirts can act as more of a dressy kind of skirt. Simply add a blazer, heels and belt and you have a very fashionable outfit for a night out-on-the-town with the girls. ;) An important thing to remember about pleated skirts is that they are meant to highlight the waits. So when you are wearing a pleated skirt make sure to tuck in your top, otherwise you'll appear shapeless. :P Another important thing to remember when wearing pleated skirts, is that there are different types of pleats that can compliment different shapes. For example:
1. Stitched-down pleats lie flat at the top--ideal for people with a little bit more of a tummy.
2. Accordion pleats are full through the hips, so you get an hourglass effect.
3. Knife pleats have the least volume: perfect for bigger bums! :P
Again, a pleated skirt is such an amazing feminine classic piece. There are multiple ways to wear it to achieve different looks. :)

3. Broom Skirts
Okay, so broom skirts are one of my favorite kinds of skirts. Whats so amazing about these skirts is that they can be worn in MANY different ways. A medium length broom skirt with a sophisticated pattern can be worn with a plain tucked in T-shirts, ballet flats and pearls for a super chic prep look. For a bohemian look, pair your broomstick skirt with a short tank top, multi-colored beads, and sandals. You can match this outfit with a dark denim jacket to add an edgy touch. To achieve the hippie effect, wear your broom skirt with a tie-dye shirt or a loosely fitting and fading tank top. Match this outfit with headgear, such as a bandana or a headband. Add large, dangling earrings and aviator sunglasses for the complete, 70s-inspired look. Another way to wear a broom skirt is in an ethnic inspired way. If you are looking to create an ethnic vibe with your broom skirt based outfit, choose an embroidered shirt. Pick bold accessories, like a bulky wooden bracelet or simple, but unique long earrings. Pair this outfit with leather sandals or basic, beaded flip flops. Not quite what you are looking for? Match a solid-colored skirt with the hues of your bathing suit for a beach-inspired, summer look. If you attend a pool party or head out to the beach, wearing a matching bathing suit under a plain tank top creates a fun way of wearing the broom skirt.

4. Maxi Skirts
Maxi skirts are often really hard for me to wear since I'm so short, but thankfully I have a mom who is wicked at sewing which makes hemming a breeze. :P With a maxi skirt you can style it in similar ways to a broom skirt. For a spring look team your skirts with a loose shirt, sandals, clogs, wedges or platforms. Avoid ballet flats with a maxi unless there is a little bit of ankle showing. If  the skirt is to the floor, then ballets can look out of proportion with the skirt, making you look shorter instead of elongated. And if the weather is still a little chilly, add a lightweight blazer . For a littler bit of edge, add a jean jacket to a maxi skirt with bold patterns. For a summer look keep things simple. Wear a lightweight skirt, tank or tee and a necklace. Add a sheer kimono top if  its cool outside. Sandals, clogs, wedges or platforms work here as well. A handy thing about maxi skirts is that they look effortlessly stylish and are all around comfortable.
My favorite trend that I’ve been seeing at the moment are all the really colorful and exotic prints that are starting to come out. I have always loved bright colors in general so seeing them finally come around in stores more regularly makes me happy. :P
